Third Wednesday Webinars

Governor's Agricultural and Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID)

The second webinar in our 2014 Third Wednesday Webinar was held on February 19, 2014.

The Governor’s Agricultural and Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID) is one of the newer incentive programs available in Virginia. The AFID program is administered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). Those familiar with the Governor’s Opportunity Fund (GOF) will see that the operating guidelines of the AFID program closely resemble the operating guidelines of the GOF. There are, however, distinct differences between the incentive programs. The AFID program is designed to attract new and expanding agriculture and forestry processing / value added facilities using Virginia grown products. The AFID Fund also features a Planning Grants program which provides smaller grants to local and regional governments to encourage community leaders to think strategically about how they can better support and integrate agriculture and forestry-based industries into the overall economic development plan.

Featured speakers include:

Travis Hill, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, Commonwealth of Virginia

Stephen Versen, AFID Fund Coordinator, Agriculture and Forestry Development Services, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

Rachel Chieppa, Rural Economic Development Manager, Office of Economic Development, Isle of Wight County

Attendees will learn:

  • The history of the AFID Fund, why the program was created, and the projects it is designed to support.

  • How the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry serves to implement and administer the AFID Fund.

  • Eligibility criteria and other ways AFID is different from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund (GOF).

  • What steps a locality should take to successfully apply for and secure an AFID grant to attract new and expanding agriculture and forestry related operations using Virginia grown products.

  • A brief overview of the AFID Planning Grants Program.

  • A recording of this session is available here.
